FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to common questions.
Does Aumora record my audio?
▾
No — never. Aumora processes audio signals in real time using your device's microphone, but raw audio is never written to storage or transmitted anywhere. The app only records derived data: decibel values, sound category labels, timestamps, and computed scores. There is no way for anyone, including us, to reconstruct audio from what Aumora stores.
Why does Aumora need microphone permission?
▾
Microphone access is required to measure ambient sound levels. Without it, the dB meter, sound classification, Focus Mode, and Sleep Tracking cannot work. You can revoke this permission any time via Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone → Aumora, but the core features will be unavailable.
Is Aumora really free? No subscriptions?
▾
Yes, completely free. There are no subscriptions, no in-app purchases, no premium tiers, and no ads. All features — including Focus Mode, Sleep Tracking, and Analytics — are available to every user at no cost.
How accurate is the dB meter?
▾
Aumora provides a good approximation of ambient sound pressure levels using your iPhone's microphone. Accuracy varies by device model and microphone characteristics. For research-grade or occupational health compliance measurements, a calibrated sound level meter should be used. Aumora's readings are accurate enough for daily awareness and hearing safety guidance.
What is the Quiet Score?
▾
The Quiet Score (0–100) is a real-time rating of how conducive your current acoustic environment is for focused work. It combines the current dB level, consistency of noise over the past few minutes, sound-type classification (steady hum vs. jarring spikes), and the rate of disturbances. A score of 80+ means a great environment for deep work; below 40 indicates frequent or loud disruptions.
How does Sleep Noise Tracking work without recording audio?
▾
During a sleep session, Aumora listens through the microphone and continuously computes dB levels and sound classifications on the device. These computed values — not audio — are logged with timestamps. In the morning, Aumora assembles a visual noise timeline and a Sleep Quality Impact Score from this derived data. No audio recording is ever made; only numbers and labels are stored.
What data is sent to Apple Health?
▾
If you grant Aumora permission to write to Apple Health, it writes a summarized sleep noise entry — for example, average dB level, number of disturbances, and a quality score for the night. No audio data or raw sound information is written. You can manage or delete this data at any time in the Apple Health app.
How long is my data stored?
▾
By default, Aumora keeps your history for 30 days. You can adjust this to anywhere between 1 and 30 days in Settings → Data & Privacy → Auto-Delete History. You can also manually clear all history at any time. Deleting the app from your device removes all data permanently.
The dB meter seems too high/low. How do I calibrate it?
▾
Aumora uses the device microphone's native sensitivity without a separate calibration step. Different iPhone models have varying microphone characteristics. If readings seem consistently off, make sure the microphone is not covered or obstructed. A calibration offset option is planned for a future update — let us know via the contact form below if this is important to you.
Will there be a Dynamic Island or Apple Watch version?
▾
Yes! Dynamic Island dB display, Lock Screen widget, and Apple Watch with haptic feedback are all on the roadmap and coming soon. We'll announce these in app update notes. If you'd like to be notified, send us your email at the contact address below and we'll reach out when these features launch.
Does Aumora work in the background during sleep tracking?
▾
Yes. When you start a Sleep Tracking session, Aumora uses iOS background audio processing to continue monitoring while the screen is off. For best results, keep your iPhone plugged in overnight and on the same surface (nightstand or nearby). Low Power Mode may affect background performance — we recommend disabling it during sleep sessions.
